The Light is Still Blue, a tribute to Juanito Delgado
Curated by Elvia Rosa Castro
Context and history: Detrás del Muro (Behind the Wall) was a bold and visionary project founded in Havana by art promoter Juan Delgado Calzadilla, back in 2012. With three editions (2012, 2015, 2019) under his wing so far, it's described as a major open-air art exhibition parallel to the Havana Biennial, featuring installations, sculptures, and performances along the iconic Malecón (seawall).
It showcased global and contemporary art focusing on Cuban artists, who transformed the 5-mile coastal esplanade into a public artistic space, often highlighting themes of daily life, community, and the connection between the city and the sea. The Malecón is a central element of Cuban identity, often depicted in art that highlights the intersection of history and daily life.
The massive exhibitions featured a wide range of media, from large-scale sculptures to photography and interactive installations that engage with the environment and local residents. Detrás del Muro brought appealing art out of traditional galleries and directly to the public, blending with the vibrant, "lived-in" atmosphere of the city.
Copperbridge Foundation worked together and collaborated with this amazing project from the beginning.
