Join us for a special presentation that explores the life and enduring impact of Nan Sheets, an influential figure in Oklahoma’s art scene. As the first director of the Oklahoma Art Center, Sheets played a pivotal role in shaping Oklahoma City’s cultural landscape. From her early work creating art spaces at her home, The Elms, to her involvement with the Federal Art Project and her leadership in the establishment of Oklahoma’s first art museum, this talk highlights how Sheets’ vision and dedication to community engagement laid the foundation for what would become the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Through her efforts to make art accessible and her lasting influence on Oklahoma’s artistic institutions, Nan Sheets’ legacy continues to resonate today.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Michaela Wegman is an art and public historian with an MA in Art History and a current PhD candidate in Public History at Middle Tennessee State University. Michaela is working as a Curatorial Fellow at OKCMOA, researching an exhibition on Nan Sheets and her contributions to New Deal art projects in Oklahoma. Michaela has worked with the Oral History Association, the Tennessee Division of Archaeology, and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, and is leading a digitization project with Google Arts and Culture to expand access to OKCMOA’s collection.
