The KNEES
The Knees workshop explores the anatomy, biomechanics, and functional role of the knees in the practice of Iyengar Yoga.
Through anatomical study and precise asana practice, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how the knees function in movement, weight bearing, balance, and stability. The seminar emphasizes injury prevention, healthy joint mechanics, and the relationship of the knees with the feet, hips, and spine in order to cultivate safer and more intelligent practice.
The knees are complex hinge joints designed to provide both mobility and support. They play a crucial role in standing, walking, running, sitting, jumping, and almost every movement involving the lower limbs. Because the knees are positioned between the mobility of the hips and the stability of the feet, imbalances or restrictions in other areas of the body often affect their function.
Understanding the anatomy and biomechanics of the knees allows practitioners to recognize movement patterns, avoid unnecessary strain, and improve alignment, stability, and efficiency in asana practice.
PROGRAM:
(Some of the themes that might be covered in this seminar)
- Functional anatomy of the knees
- Osteology: femur, tibia, fibula, and patella
- Structure and function of the knee joint
- Main ligaments, menisci, and connective tissues
- Myology of the knee and surrounding structures
- Axes, planes, and biomechanics of knee movement
- Flexion, extension, rotation, and ranges of motion
- Stability and mobility of the knees
- Weight bearing, balance, and the influence of gravity
- Relationship between knees, feet, hips, and pelvis
- Alignment principles in standing poses and transitions
- Functional anatomy applied to asana practice
- Knee actions in standing poses, seated poses, forward extensions, backbends, and inversions
- Hyperextension, joint compression, and compensatory patterns
- Common knee pathologies and injury mechanisms
- Prevention and management of knee discomfort in yoga practice
- Adaptations and variations according to individual structure and condition
- Intelligent use of props to support knee function
- Strengthening, stretching, and mobility exercises for knee health
- Observation and body reading: recognizing knee patterns and their implications in asana
- Sequencing principles for knee stability and joint integrity
- Homework and anatomy quiz related to the knees and lower limb mechanics

PELVIC GIRDLE & HIPS
The seminar PELVIC GIRDLE AND HIPS explores the anatomy, biomechanics, and functional movement of the pelvis and hips, and how these principles can be intelligently applied in the practice of Iyengar Yoga.
Through observation, precise alignment, and experiential practice, we will study how the pelvic girdle influences posture, balance, stability, mobility, and the integration of the whole body in asana practice. The workshop also addresses common dysfunctions, injury prevention, and the relationship between structural organization and freedom of movement.
The pelvis and hips form a central axis of support and movement in the body. The pelvic girdle connects the spine to the lower limbs and plays a fundamental role in weight bearing, locomotion, and postural organization. The hip joints are deep and powerful articulations designed to provide both stability and mobility, allowing actions such as walking, sitting, bending, turning, and balancing.
A clearer understanding of the bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues of this region helps practitioners refine their asana practice with greater awareness, safety, and efficiency.
PROGRAM:
