The public is invited to gather at Filey’s Cemetery in Dillsburg for a community Memorial Day observance honoring the veterans who rest there and the service they gave to their country.
At the center of the ceremony will be the long-overdue recognition of Civil War veteran and former prisoner of war Jackson Martin, a York County native who served in Company H of the 7th Pennsylvania Reserves.
Captured during the Overland Campaign in 1864, Martin endured months of imprisonment at Andersonville Prison. Though he survived captivity, he returned home with his health permanently damaged by disease and starvation. In the years that followed, that damage shaped the course of his life and left him among those veterans whose service was never fully recognized in their own time.
When he died in 1928, no military headstone marked his grave, despite his service.
Now, nearly a century later, his grave has been properly marked through work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
This observance will formally restore his name and service to the historic memory of the community while also honoring the many other veterans buried at Filey’s Cemetery whose lives reflect generations of military service.
The program will include participation by elements of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, including Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 108th Field Artillery Regiment, musical contributions from members of the York Symphony Orchestra and the Northern York High School band, and remarks from State Senator Dawn Keefer, York County Commissioner Julie Wheeler, and State Representative Mark Anderson.
All are welcome to attend as the community gathers to remember those who served and to ensure that their stories are not forgotten.
