About this Event
The Iron Pour, as part of the second annual Trade Collective Skilled Trades Expo, will be hosted in partnership with Chicago Crucible and the Segal Design Institute's Manufacturing & Design Engineering (MaDE) Program at Northwestern University. Professors Matthew Cummins and David Gatchell, through their unique course DSGN 376: Leonardo, Geometry, and the Art of Manufacturing, produce this powerful, hands-on demonstration that introduces students to a centuries-old manufacturing process and sparks curiosity in sand casting, foundry, and other skilled trades. During the pour, students will work alongside experts to guide molten iron from a 3,000-degree furnace into 3D-printed sand molds. It is an unforgettable experience! This year, for the first time, they will also be casting several dozen pieces designed by ETHS art and engineering students.
