About this Event
To mark this year’s Dublin Festival of History, we’re hosting a talk based on the exhibition 'The Irish Language & 1925 Gaeltacht Census’ which is currently on display in the National Archives on Bishop Street.
In their talk, archivist Vera Moynes and historian Gregory Walls will highlight the records included in the exhibition and discuss how this milestone census spurred government efforts to preserve the Irish language and to assist Gaeltacht communities in remote areas. Basing their talk on documents held in the National Archives, they’ll show how language, policy and identity interacted with each other in the early years of the Irish Free State.
This talk will provide a wonderful opportunity to bring the exhibition vividly to life and to hear the stories behind it, ranging from efforts to restore Irish placenames and preserve local heritage to encouraging indigenous industries and upgrading housing.
