About this Event
Join us on Monday, April 20 at 6 p.m. for "The Intersection of Peace Building and Public Service," a conversation with Dr. David Fernández Puyana, Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the United Nations University for Peace to the United Nations in Vienna and Geneva.
In this conversation, moderated by Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco-Soto, Puyana will explore how principles of peacebuilding intersect with the practice of public service leadership, from international diplomacy to community-level collaboration. Drawing on his experience across the United Nations system and global civil society, he will discuss how institutions and individuals can strengthen dialogue, cooperation, and sustainable peace in an increasingly complex world.

Dr. David Fernández Puyana is the Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the United Nations University for Peace to the United Nations at Vienna and Geneva.
During his career, he, who is also Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the United Nations University for Peace to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, has served in various capacities, among them: Lecturer in diplomacy and international relations at the Shanghai University in Law and Political Science, and the Diplomatic Institute Dr. Jose Gustavo Guerrero -El Salvador-. ; Coordinator of the UNESCO “Peace Research” (2015-2017); Adviser to the UNESCO Liaison Office in Geneva; Legal and diplomatic adviser at the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the UN in Geneva and Assistant to the Chairperson-Rapporteur of the UN Intergovernmental Open Ended Working Group on the right to peace (2013-2015); worked with Religions for Peace, Finn Church Aid, UNESCO Etxea and International Association of Peace Messenger Cities (2006-2013); and co-founded the UNESCO Chair on Peace, Solidarity and Intercultural Dialogue at the University Abat Oliba CEU in Spain. He cooperates with the King Hamad Global Center on Coexistence and Tolerance -Bahrain- , Paz sin Fronteras - Spain- and the Geneva Institute for Leadership and Public Policy -Switzerland-.
Mr. Fernández Puyana holds the title of Doctor in Law with European Mention from the University of Pompeu Fabra, Spain and a LLM on Human Rights Law from the University of Essex, United Kingdom. He also has a Master’s on Human Rights Protection from the University of Alcala de Henares, Spain and a Master’s on International Relations from the University of Pompeu Fabra.
