In this lecture, UNLV Professor Tyler D. Parry explores the fascinating origins of Juneteenth, investigating how it went from a local tradition celebrated by the African American community in Galveston, Texas to one recognized throughout the United States. He examines how the tradition spread to various parts of the country during the "Great Migration," in which African Americans left the Jim Crow South and settled in various areas of the Northern and Western United States. He specifically provides new information on how Juneteenth is commemorated throughout southern Nevada, providing historical context for its growth and visibility throughout Greater Las Vegas.
Free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and may be limited. For more information, please call 702.507.4017
