The wonderful, sophisticated songs in the Songbook are mostly about love, but many are tinged with wit and sarcasm. The main providers of humor in their tunes were Ira Gerswhin (with brother George) and Cole Porter. Ira famously wrote the clever wordplay in “Let’s Call the Whole thing Off” (You Say Neither and I Say Neither). Cole Porter was particularly adept at pairing witty, cutting lyrics with sophisticated melodies, as in the song “Let’s Do It” (Birds Do It, Bees Do It). There are many other examples of songs by other writers, such as Makin’ Whoopee, and If I Only Had a Brain.
