Prolific author Rosemary Hayes will talk about her prize-winning novel ‘The King’s Command’, based upon the experiences of her own ancestors and set against the background of an almost forgotten period of history: the persecution of the Huguenots – Calvinist Protestants – in 17th century France. We first meet the heroine of the story, Lidie Brunier, on her 16th birthday; she has looks, wealth, health and a charming suitor but before long her comfortable life starts to disintegrate. Huguenots are stripped of all rights and the King sends his brutal soldiers into their homes to force them to become Catholics. Lidie and her family refuse to convert but then a shocking betrayal forces them to flee for their lives, bringing unimaginable hardship and tragedy and changes their lives for ever. Rosemary will bring copies of her books to sign including her latest two set in the Napoleonic period.
The talk is free but donations towards the library and to cover speaker expenses, wine and nibbles are appreciated.
Watch this space though as the refurbishments are not quite done so there is a tiny possibility we may need to push this talk back a week
