The talk will also explore overshadowed figures and lesser told stories as well as challenge taken-for-granted ideas about musical theatre, revealing a history which is more complex than at first may seem.

Professor Millie Taylor is Emeritus Professor at the University of Winchester and Van den Ende Chair of the Musical at the University of Amsterdam. She began her career as a freelance musical director and, for almost twenty years, performed shows such as West Side Story, The Rocky Horror Show, Little Shop of Horrors and Sweeney Todd. She switched to research and lecturing in 2001 and has since written (or co written) seven books and numerous articles on the history and dramaturgy of musicals. She was the first professor of musical theatre in the UK in 2012, and the first professor of the musical in the Netherlands in 2020.
