Keith Butler, who identifies as an Anglo-Indian, reveals how his community grew up without being taught its own history. Discovering that Anglo-Indian history was probably never taught at school level in India, Butler set out to not only to expose this absence, but to correct it.His response was The History of Anglo-Indians, a bold, accessible graphic novel created for readers of all ages and nationality.
Following its launch in India in January 2026, 300 copies sold in just three weeks, confirming a powerful appetite for a decolonised telling of Anglo-Indian history. Interestingly, it wasn’t only the community who purchased the book but Indians of many other persuasions.
In this talk, Butler shares the highs and sighs of taking that story on the road—selling a reclaimed community history while India itself is re-examining its national narrative. Honest, engaging, and resonant also of the Māori experience in New Zealand, this is a conversation about memory, identity, and who gets to tell history.
