From Farmland to Shopping Center to Mixed-Use Community

Join us for a walking tour of The Grove, the redevelopment of Newark’s former College Square Shopping Center and an example of how an aging, auto-oriented shopping center can be transformed into a vibrant mixed-use community.

The Grove combines over 300 luxury apartments with restaurants, retail, fitness, recreation, and entertainment organized around a central courtyard plaza. Pedestrian and bicycle improvements, parks, gathering spaces, and active recreation—including pickleball at The Picklr—help create an environment designed for people as well as cars. Entertainment and dining destinations such as Lefty’s Alley & Eats further contribute to an active mix of uses.

The walking tour will explore the planning and design behind the transformation, highlighting how redevelopment, mixed-use development, placemaking, connectivity, and active open space can breathe new life into an older commercial center and create a more walkable community destination.
