Deep in the wild Southern Ocean, halfway between Australia and South Africa, an icy mountain rears almost 3000 metres out of the wild Southern Ocean like a great white whale. Five times it tried to K*ll those who first tried to reach its summit, yet back they sailed with legendary explorer Bill Tilman at the helm.
Join the crew on this epic 1960’s expedition to the smoking, glacier ringed volcano on Heard Island, Australia’s loneliest, most remote outpost. The beautifully shot expedition footage, the brilliant musical score, the quirky humour of the expeditioners, the utter boldness of the quest, all add spice to one of the least known yet most audacious adventure tales of the 20th Century.
Michael’s 50 years of award-winning adventure filmmaking have included projects with Sir Edmund Hillary, Tim Macartney-Snape, Tim Cope and many others. In 2022 he was awarded the Grand Prize for lifetime achievement by the International Federation of Mountain Film, the first time anyone from the Southern hemisphere has been so honoured.
Paul Jarman, the composer, will be introducing the film and holding a Q&A after the screening.
