Mead may invoke memories from a fun and fanciful evening spent at the Renaissance Festival, scenes from your favorite ‘Game of Thrones’ episode, or even lore about vikings sipping on large steins of this flavorful elixir. Bur in reality – mead or “honey wine” is the first known alcoholic beverage ever consumed by mankind and it’s an age old tradition that has been surging back in popularity in recent years! During this experience, you’ll have the opportunity to visit three unique local meaderies throughout the greater Twin Cities metro as you enjoy a wide array of mead tastings, alongside delicious food, as we enjoy this truly unique experience that revolves all around the mighty mead!
On select Saturdays and Sundays this coming winter into early spring, our event will begin in Roseville, MN where your local Gurus will “bee” happy to welcome you and help get you settled in on our luxury coach bus, which will transport us from stop-to-stop on our days mead-ventures. Our first stop for the day will be to the family owned and operated Winehaven Winery, who’s been making meads longer than anyone in Minnesota. While they’re now primarily know for their award winning wines, when they first opened in 1995 all they offered was mead and throughout their tenure they’ve kept the tradition of mead making alive and at the center of all they do at Winehaven – which is why the honey bee is proudly shown on all their labels. Here we’ll enjoy a tasting of all four of their locally made meads, as we take in the views of their beautiful estate from the comfort of their tasting room. As we are welcomed with their award winning Stinger Mead we will be treated to some family style charcuterie boards as an appetizer, and then get to enjoy a scrumptious salad and flatbread pizza buffet for lunch.
With bellies full, we will head to Minnesota’s newest and certainly quirkiest meadery – Bumbling Fools Mead in Minneapolis, MN. The vision for Bumbling Fools first began in 2019 where its lovable owners started concocting their plans to brew mead that “takes inspiration from both historic and contemporary recipes and apply modern techniques to create mead that stands apart from many of the preconceived notions of what honey wine is”. Opening up early just for us, the “bumbling fools” themselves will welcome us with a tasting flight of five of their locally made and sourced meads. Here we’ll not only get to enjoy the quaint and funky vibes of their basement level tasting space, we’ll also have the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes peek at their mead making process.
From here, we will head to White Bear Meadery, who pride themselves on focusing on locally sourced ingredients whose star is Minnesota harvested honey that they turn into the state’s widest array of meads! They’ve mastered the art of blending honey with other fresh local ingredients like local strawberries, raspberries, maple syrup and apples…just to name a few! Here we will enjoy our final tasting flight of five meads, paired with an afternoon snack featuring an individual soft pretzel served with your choice of nacho cheese or ground honey mustard. After we’ve “drank like a Viking” in their viking themed tasting room, we will have the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at their production space and learn more about their unique spin on the age old tradition of brewing honey wine.
Throughout the day, you will have the opportunity to purchase additional tastings, glasses and bottles of mead to your heart’s content.
As the day draws to a close and we make our return trip home, we’re sure that your head will be “buzzing” with memories as rich as the meads we enjoyed while we drank like vikings…skål!
