THE STORY... Adapted by Jim Quinlan

THE GREAT GATSBY is a 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows the tragic story of mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his obsessive pursuit of his former lover, Daisy Buchanan.

• The Move to New York: Narrator Nick Carraway moves to Long Island in 1922 and rents a house next door to Jay Gatsby, a fabulously wealthy man who hosts massive, extravagant parties.
• The Reunion: Nick discovers that Gatsby is deeply in love with Nick's cousin, Daisy. Daisy is married to the arrogant, unfaithful Tom Buchanan. Gatsby built his entire fortune and persona through bootlegging just to win Daisy back. Gatsby and Nick reconnect, and Gatsby uses Nick to arrange a reunion with Daisy, leading to an rekindled affair.
• The Conflict: Tom discovers the affair during a tense confrontation in New York City. While driving back, Gatsby's car—driven by Daisy—hits and kills Tom's mistress, Myrtle Wilson.
• The Tragedy: Myrtle’s husband, George, believes the driver of the yellow car (Gatsby) intentionally killed his wife. George shoots and kills Gatsby at his mansion before taking his own life.
• The Aftermath: Disillusioned by the shallow, corrupt lives of the wealthy elite, Nick moves back to the Midwest, reflecting on the failure of the American Dream.
