Open Table Faith invites you into a public celebration of the music and theology of iconic singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. Expect musical performances and a keynote talk from Abilene Christian University professor Richard Beck, author of "Trains, Jesus and Murder: The Gospel According to Johnny Cash."
"The Man in Black" often explored themes of moral struggle, sorrow and redemption in his songs -- leading Beck to describe his music as "saints and sinners, all jumbled up together. That's the genius of Johnny Cash, and that's what the gospel is ultimately all about."
Cash famously brought concerts into prisons, playing for people on the margins in sets that mixed murder ballads and gospel tunes. It's this juxtaposition between light and dark that makes Cash one of the most authentic theologians in memory.
