The Good, the Bad and the Bugly

What’s that bug in my yard? Come learn about some of the insects you might find in your backyard!

While insects make up approximately 80% of animal life on Earth, we often forget to stop and get a closer look at all the insects foraging on plants, landing on our cars, or flying by us every day. Some insects help pollinate, some have crazy adaptations, and others may be garden pests. Come learn more about some of the insects we may encounter out on the CREW trails or even in our own back yard. 

Kara Tyler-Julian is an entomologist with a passion for the environment. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Psychology from the New College of Florida and a Master of Science in Entomology (specializing in Integrated Pest Management) from the University of Florida. She has academic and professional experience working with a variety of living organisms ranging from plants and insects to fish, birds, reptiles and even manatees. Her published research includes subjects as diverse as lateralization in manatees, thrips in Spanish Moss, and an organic push-pull method of managing thrips and tospoviruses on tomatoes and peppers. She is currently employed as the Field Validation Biologist for Lee County Mosquito Control maintaining the mosquito and Gambusia colonies, and conducting experiments to verify the efficacy of different mosquito control products.

Light refreshments start at 6:30 pm, Lecture will be 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
