About this Event

United by themes of memory and trauma, arresting imagery and inventive approaches to form, acclaimed writer Nick Flynn and trailblazing filmmaker Beth B come together for a special evening that places their art in conversation. The program features highlights of B’s films, including excerpts of her most recent work, Glowing, which features Flynn. Mutual collaborator Jim Coleman provides atmospheric musical interludes and underscores Flynn’s reading from his lyrical memoir This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire.

Curated and hosted by Joseph Keckler, The Golden Hour unfolds as a kaleidoscopic evening of music, storytelling, and unexpected performance. Past guests have included Charlie Kaufman, Edgar Oliver, Alex Tatarsky, Lindy West, Ahamefule Oluo, and Dael Orlandersmith.

“[Flynn’s] poems are more than testimony; in lyrics of ringing clarity and strange precision, Flynn conjures a will to survive, the buoyant motion toward love which is sometimes all that saves us.” — Mark Doty

Nick Flynn (writer, playwright, poet) has published 12 books, most recently This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire (2020), a hybrid memoir, and Stay: threads, collaborations, and conversations (2020), which documents twenty-five years of his collaborations with artists, filmmakers, and composers. He is also the author of five collections of poetry, including I Will Destroy You (2019). He has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Library of Congress, and is on the creative writing faculty at the University of Houston. His acclaimed memoir, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City (2004), was made into a film starring Robert DeNiro, and has been translated into 15 languages.

“Beth B’s films tell potent stories about institutional power and heteropatriarchal control with bite, humor, and explosive creativity.” — Caitlin Lent, Interview Magazine

Beth B’s prolific career is characterized by work that challenges society’s conventions, with a particular focus on social issues and human rights. In the years following her legendary partnership with Scott B in the Downtown NYC small-gauge filmmaking scene, B has produced over 30 documentary, experimental, and narrative films, as well as interdisciplinary work that has been shown in festivals, galleries, and museums throughout the world, including Sundance, Toronto International Film Festival, Centre Pompidou, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2022-23, MoMA honored her with a career retrospective celebrating 45 years of filmmaking, including newly restored versions of her landmark feature films.
