With a strong reception to both of their albums (Hot As Buggery, BUNG IT ON!), The Golden Gaytimes have built a reputation for hugely entertaining live shows, at bars, clubs, and pubs across Australia's eastern states, regaling audiences with their brand of fun and irreverent rock and pop.
Like a glitter bomb with a rock 'n' roll heart of gold, they're a band driven by the understanding that great music is made with liberal measures of both spook and wonk.
Now, ahead of a new run of NSW live shows (dates below), The Golden Gaytimes release 'I'm Not Going Anywhere', (as premiered by Amnplify) the latest single/video from BUNG IT ON!
Coming on like a buzzing blend of glam disco swagger and indie rock carnival attitude, the single features singer Jane-O in full flight – the diva, the MC, and the high priestess of kaleidoscopic lyricism.
In the fairground of unconditional love
The sweet tooth of chance,
The fireworks of fear,
The jumping castle of joy
And the hot chips of happiness
Give you the ride of your life.
Let The Ferris Wheel pause at the top for you!
The song comes with a new fun-packed video clip of creepy clowns, vicarious sideshow alley attractions, and fairground festivities, courtesy of Matthew Walker, director of the film Live It Up: The Mental As Anything Story.
On BUNG IT ON! the band surrendered to their madcap muse, with no pandering to trends or the thought of being part of a scene. They followed their instincts, unfurled their freak flags, and continued what they'd started with Hot As Buggery — combining a new wave guitar pop aesthetic with disco, glam, and energetic garage rock.
Endless hooks and witty wordplay pepper their honest assessment of modern life across the album's 11 songs.
From Muswellbrook to Murrurundi, Bondi to Rio, there's a kaleidoscopic quality to the songs as they try to make sense of the weird and wonderful world around us, as the band explain. "The original title for BUNG IT ON! was Selected Musings on the Logical and Ideological Inconsistencies in the Immediate Tense, which to be fair is a more accurate if less precise summation of the album’s thematic preoccupations."
The glue holding it all together is the band's effervescent way with melody, both in the vocals of heroic singer Jane-O, the cascading, unapologetically 80s synths, and guitars that equally channel The Cars and The Cult, ZZ Top and The B-52s – a perfect amalgam of pop and rock.
Bung it on, drop the needle, and revel in the spook and wonk of The Golden Gaytimes!
