"The Ghosts of Gatsby" is a jazz-inspired chamber opera that explores the rocky relationship between F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, during the writing of "The Great Gatsby.”Set on the French Riviera in 1924, Scott spends his days drinking, writing, and obsessed with Zelda’s extramarital affair and living in the past.
After Scott locks Zelda in their bedroom, she interacts with visions of her younger and older selves in a schizophrenic episode. Which Zelda is real? Or is the entire scene a troubling dream about choices made and roads not taken?
Using the writings of Scott and Zelda, Evan Mack and Josh McGuire’s “The Ghosts of Gatsby” proves itself to be a model of contemporary opera. The production won first prize in the 2019 National Opera Association’s Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition.
