If you're reading this, it's probably because you have the seed of a novel buried somewhere. Maybe it's in a Google Doc or your phone's Notes app, maybe it's in a cheap notebook or a fancy journal, maybe it's just tucked in a quiet corner of your mind, or maybe it slipped out of your mouth during a late-night conversation with a friend. Maybe that seed has already begun to sprout some leaves, or maybe it seems completely dried up. But if you'd like to try nurturing that seed and seeing what grows, and if you'd like to do that alongside other writers tending their own seeds, you're invited to the The Garden of First darfts workshop series.
During this three-month program, we'll use writer Dan Wells' Seven Point story structure to give our narratives some shape and direction, but we'll also dabble in other plotting techniques. In each session, we'll focus on one step of the plot arc, and we'll discuss the latest ups and downs of our writing processes. While there will be some writing time built into each session, if you really want to finish a draft of a novel by the end of the program, you'll need to do so homework--a few thousand words a week! But don't worry...you'll have a community of fellow writers with you to provide encouragement.
In the end, though, the point of this program isn't necessarily to write a complete novel or to reach a certain word count. It's about trying to nurture an idea and help it grow. Some ideas are easier to cultivate than others, sometimes the conditions aren't right for them to grow, and sometimes we have to compost the things we tried to grow to create fertile soil for new ideas. Regardless of what we produce by the end of our time together, we'll all be able to harvest something.
