This Monday marks the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. DTSB, The Hideaway, and The History Museum invite you to join us in commemorating this tragic chapter in Great Lakes history.Throughout the evening, we’ll listen to Gordon Lightfoot’s haunting ballad, enjoy Edmund Fitzgerald Porter on tap, and hear from History Museum archivist Travis Childs at 7:00 p.m. as he shares insights into the ship, the storm, and the enduring legend of the Fitzgerald.
The History Museum’s current exhibit, Freshwater Fury: Great Lakes Shipwrecks, curated by Travis Childs, explores the perilous beauty of the Great Lakes and the thousands of ships that have met their fate in their depths.
Raise a glass in remembrance of the 29 crew members lost and reflect on the powerful legacy of the Great Lakes.
Parking is available in the NIPSCO lot across from the LaSalle Hotel and behind the building.
Additional Information Provided by the History Museum:
November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, an ore carrier, sank during a storm in Lake Superior. The Great Lakes are the largest expanse of freshwater on earth, and while most people may associate major shipwrecks like the Fitzgerald with oceans and international travel, the lakes hold a deadly secret: researchers estimate that the five Great Lakes contain between 7,000 and 10,00 shipwrecks.
The Great Lakes act as an essential transportation network for North America, with over 100 lake freighters operating continuously except in the winter. Additionally, the Great Lakes act as a great tourist attraction - many of you reading this may have even visited the lakes while on vacation. But despite their popularity and importance, the dangers of the Great Lakes often go undiscussed, along with the sailors who brave them.
Learn more about the wonderful and sometimes perilous history of the Great Lakes in our current exhibit, Freshwater Fury: Great Lakes Shipwrecks.
