What does China('s leadership) stand to gain or lose by remaining close to Russia? This discussion will delve into energy and broader economic ties, Russia's potential role in conflicts involving China in the Indo-Pacific, and the joint promotion of (global) governance ideas. It will also address the realities of China’s and Russia’s presence and cooperation in the Arctic, as well as consequences of their deeper bilateral ties for China-Europe ties and China's regional security interests in East Asia.
Speaker's Bio: Dr. Thomas Eder is a Research Fellow at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (OIIP) with a focus on China's foreign, security and international law policy. He has published widely on China-Russia relations including in Foreign Affairs, and co-organizes an annual China-Russia roundtable at the ISA conference with Prof. Elizabeth Wishnick. He teaches at the University of Vienna and previously worked at MERICS (Mercator Institute for China Studies) in Berlin and the Austrian Foreign Ministry. He studied at the University of Vienna, Peking University and the University of Hong Kong, was a guest scholar at Academia Sinica in Taipei and at the NYU US-Asia Law Institute with Prof. Jerome Cohen, and held fellowships with the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna and the CHOICE network in Prague.
