Discover the storied past, multi-faceted present and positive future of the Forest of Selwood, on Bruton’s doorstep.Bruton lays on the western Bounds of the Norman Forest, which appropriated a recorded history back to post-Roman times. Saxon Sealwudu (Coit Maur to earlier British inhabitants) was an intimidating natural and psychological barrier that once divided peoples.
Today, forward looking farmers and local landowners are working together to revive nature in this deeply historic landscape, and bring benefits to communities by celebrating Selwood's unique cultural heritage.
Dr Ewan Jones grew up in the lowlands a few miles from Bruton, studied with the great landscape historian Oliver Rackham, and was a founding Trustee of the Forest of Selwood Charity, which itself grew from the fertile seeds sown a decade ago by Somerset Wildlife Trusts “Selwood Living Landscape” project.
