A workshop exploring Chabana, the Japanese tea ceremony’s meditative floral art & connect with the season through simple, natural beauty.
About this Event

Summer Chabana reflects the vitality and quiet abundance of the season. Rather than creating fullness for its own sake, it evokes a subtle sense of coolness (suzushisa)—allowing wild grasses, slender branches, and fleeting blossoms to express their natural beauty without forcing their form.
Chabana (茶花), meaning "tea flowers," is the simple, natural style of floral arrangement practiced in the Japanese tea ceremony. We invite you to join us for an intimate, hands-on workshop exploring the art and philosophy of this meditative practice—a quiet invitation to experience the turning of the season through simplicity, keen attention, and care.
What We Will Explore

  • The Philosophy of Chabana: Discover how Chabana differs from the more formal traditions of Ikebana, embracing simplicity, transience, seasonality, and the spirit of wabi.
  • Seasonal Summer Flora: Work with seasonal flowers, grasses, and foliage while learning to observe and honor each stem's natural movement, rhythm, and character.
  • Vessels & Dew: Explore traditional seasonal containers—from bamboo and gourds to unglazed ceramics—and practice the subtle art of misting leaves to evoke the refreshing cool of morning dew.
  • Hands-On Practice: Create your own simple yet expressive summer arrangement that honors the unforced form of each plant.

A gentle practice of slowing down, observing, and allowing each flower to remain true to its own nature.
