DETAILS: The Sunscreen Film Festival, in partnership with The University of Tampa Film, Animation and New Media program, presents a special screening of the feature documentary The Fish Don't Care When It Rains, followed by a Q&A with Jennifer Msumba.
Jennifer is an autistic musician, artist, filmmaker, and storyteller from the Tampa Bay area whose remarkable journey is at the center of the documentary. Through Jennifer's own perspective, the film explores creativity, disability, institutionalization, resilience, independence, and what it means to build a meaningful life after experiencing extraordinary circumstances.
The documentary follows Jennifer's journey from a childhood spent navigating the mental health system, including years inside residential treatment facilities, to finding her voice and building a life through music, art, filmmaking, and storytelling.
Following its World Premiere at the Heartland Film Festival and its weeklong Oscar-qualifying theatrical run starting in Dallas on October 16th,The Fish Don't Care When It Rains comes to The University of Tampa for this special screening.
The film's trailer and Jennifer's story have already connected with millions of viewers online, generating an extraordinary response and conversation around the themes explored in the documentary.
SPECIAL Q&A
Following the film, Jennifer Msumba will participate in a live Q&A, discussing both the experiences explored in the documentary and her work today as a filmmaker, musician, artist, and creative professional.
The conversation will offer students and members of the community an opportunity to hear directly from the person whose story they have just experienced on screen and learn more about the filmmaking process, Jennifer's creative work, and the journey behind the documentary.
University of Tampa students attend FREE with a valid student ID.
General admission tickets for the public are $12.
