About this Event

We are so excited to welcome Morag Rose to the shop for our first ever author talk meets guided walk!

Morag Rose, author of THE FEMINIST ART OF WALKING, will be leading a tour through the local area and discussing her book, culminating in an audience q&a and booksigning back at the shop.

The tour begins at 6pm, meeting at Blackwell's Bookshop. The walk will last approximately 90 minutes and follow an accessible route, with no steep inclines or exceptionally hazardous sites. The pace will be slow with frequent stops to share stories, and some of those stops will include places to sit down. We will then make our way back to the Blackwell's for around 7.30pm.

About THE FEMINIST ART OF WALKING:

The allure of the city is powerful, but not universally accessible. For many women, it can be exclusionary, exploitative and dangerous. In The Feminist Art of Walking, Morag Rose shows how women can and do claim their place in the public space. Setting off to explore cities and towns across Britain, she traces local histories and personal stories and attunes herself to the wider resonances of women's rights amidst alienating capitalist cityscapes. Craving connection and comradeship, she discovers a unique and inclusive approach to walking, celebrating diverse women who transform walking into an art form and act of resistance. By experiencing the pleasures and pains of urban exploration, she shows us how to reconnect with and become enchanted by our streets.

About the author:

Morag Rose is a walking artist-activist-academic based in Salford. In 2006 she founded Manchester based psychogeographical collective The LRM (Loiterers Resistance Movement). The LRM manifesto states "The Streets Belong to Everyone" and on the First Sunday of every month they organise free, communal, creative wanders across the city. Morag is chair of Our Irwell, a community organisation formed to protect, promote and progress access to the river. Morag is also a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at The University of Liverpool. Her research focuses on access, inequality and walking as a creative, social and political act.

If you have any specific access needs please get in touch before the event and we will do our very best to accommodate you. Please also get in touch if you have any questions or need any more information.

If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email [email protected] or call us on 0161 274 3331.

Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new.

Support your local bookshop and help us keep the Manchester literary scene vibrant and exciting. You can follow us on Eventbrite and social media (@BlackwellsMCR) to keep up to date on upcoming events.
