Yet questions over plagiarism, fabricated credentials, and improbable personal feats triggered resignation and intense media examination. • Diagnosed at age 3 with autism, global developmental delay (and related conditions), with doctors saying he would never walk, talk or read and was “no better than a vegetable”
• Survived testicular cancer, a brain tumour (or tumours), locked-in syndrome, a car-crash-induced coma, and epilepsy (allegedly triggered by a severe beating)
• Ran 30 marathons in 35 days (completing the final nine after an epileptic seizure and hairline leg fracture)
• Ran 600 miles in six days (or sometimes framed as 300 miles in three days)
• Personally raised £5–5.5 million for dozens of charities (mainly via endurance running)
• Installed water points/pumps in South America (Brazil favelas) and West Africa
• Appeared as a child in the BBC’s Seven Up! documentary series
• Held multiple visiting professorships (e.g. Ohio State, Glasgow, Nelson Mandela University) and published a book titled Being Young, Black and Male
• Endured repeated violent threats after Cambridge appointment, including knife-wielding masked intruders, a severed pig’s head, bananas, bullets and corrosive substances sent to him or his family
