In our desire to tame, train and dominate horses, we often fail to realize how much equines can teach us.
The Fable begins with seven dancers in an open pasture with horses. The lush choreography includes intimate chance encounters between humans and equines.
Gradually the audience is lead into an enclosed round pen arena where the heartbeat of The Fable is revealed in a confession shared with Skippy, a miniature donkey: Donkeys are hardy animals capable of surviving in harsh environments and carrying heavy loads over long distances. They are invaluable working animals in many parts of the world. Humans have a lot to learn from the Donkey whose patience, resilience and occasional measured persistence are fundamental to their survival.
In the round pen, the human-equine interactions reveal choreography created in real time. Departing from traditional equine performance - in which the human directs the horse's behavior and movement - the choreography is shaped by the curiosity and behavior of the horse. To accomplish this, the dancers are merging horsemanship savvy with moment to moment choreographic decision-making.
Equine interludes alternate with lush dancing without horses: Rituals, alpha negotiations, a quiet meditation on stillness
and athletic play.
