The Eyes of Ghana From Oscar ® -winning director Ben Proudfoot, executive producers Barack and Michelle Obama, and producer IShowSpeed, THE EYES OF GHANA is a stunning feature documentary following 93-year-old documentarian Chris Hesse—personal cinematographer to African icon Kwame Nkrumah (the first president of liberated Ghana) —as he races against blindness and time to rescue and repatriate a secret trove of over 1,300 films that captured the birth of African independence in the fifties and sixties. Yet unseen by the public, these films may not only rewrite Ghanaian and African history—but world history itself. Director: Ben Proudfoot United States of America | 2025 | 90m | English, Twi, Ga Breakwater Productions A Forgotten History: Chris Hesse served as the personal cameraman to the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. In 1966, at the onset of a CIA-backed coup, Nkrumah was removed from power, and the footage that Hesse had spent a decade capturing was burned by the coupmakers. All was lost. Or so they thought. A Legacy Restored: For decades, Chris Hesse has preserved over 1,000+ reels of Ghana's liberation story — marking it as the single largest existing archive detailing Ghana's liberation story. The team behind The Eyes of Ghana: Anita Afonu serves as a producer alongside Ghanaian-Canadian Nana Adwoa Frimpong and the Oscar-nominated Moses Bwayo. Oscar-nominated composer Kris Bowers provides the score. Serving as executive producers are Barack and Michelle Obama through their production company, Higher Ground.
