John Higgs, writer and cultural historian, talks with Timothy Young, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, about the contemporary relevance of William Blake’s artistic practice.William Blake (1757–1827) is often described as one of the most compelling yet misunderstood figures in the history of British art and poetry, a genius and “an interruption in cultural history.” In his book William Blake Vs. The World, John Higgs addresses the mystery of Blake. Blake developed a distinct worldview during a turbulent time in history that witnessed the American and French Revolutions. He expressed his radical perspectives on religious belief, politics, and society through highly original illuminated books, watercolors, paintings, and poetry. This conversation situates Blake in his time and connects him to the questions of today.
