The refined rooms of American philanthropist and aesthete Bunny Mellon (1910–2014)—interiors influential for their ability to combine magnificent collections of fine and decorative art with an ambiance of comfort and ease—were documented by artist Snowy Campbell, a lasting tribute to Mellon’s impeccable taste.
The houses of Mellon and her husband Paul have become icons in the field of interior decoration, filled with fine antiques, blue-chip works of art (a Van Gogh left unframed and propped on a mantel), personal mementos, and exquisite objets d’art, all displayed in Mellon’s inimitably sophisticated yet charming way. Campbell was employed by Mellon in 1970 for six years, just after college, to document in paint several residences of the Mellons—presented here as a group for the first time.
This book—a project that was started by Mellon but never realized until now—presents Campbell’s paintings that capture the colors, light, and ambiance of rooms and gardens, as well as intricate patterns and details of furnishings in spaces put together with help from renowned decorators John Fowler and Bruce Budd. Three residences—in New York City; Washington, DC; and Upperville, Virginia—are the focus, with texts by society chronicler James Reginato describing Mellon’s decorating style and the ways the Mellons used each property. Opening the doors to a life of superb connoisseurship, this volume is an homage to the interiors of a renowned couple and the extraordinary work of a young artist.

Charlotte Moss is one of the most celebrated and enduring voices in interior design. With a career spanning four decades, she is revered not only for her timeless aesthetic and layered interiors, but also for her commitment to culture, community and philanthropy. Moss holds honorary doctorate degrees from both the New York School of Interior Design and Virginia Commonwealth University, her alma mater, where she also endows scholarships for the next generation.

Since founding her eponymous firm in 1985, Charlotte Moss has shaped private residences and executive suites across the United States and abroad with projects located in Los Angeles, Montecito, Denver, Palm Beach, Bermuda, Saint Barts, Bahamas, Aspen, New York, Texas, and the Hamptons. Her work is widely associated with warmth and hospitality—rooms designed to be lived in, gathered in, and passed down. Her retail ventures, long recognized for their discerning eye and global reach, further cemented her influence on the decorative arts.

Travel, history, and the study of traditional forms have long informed Moss’s approach. Drawing on decades of experience, she has translated her vision into licensed collections with Century Furniture, Fabricut, Stark Carpet, Pickard, P.E. Guerin and others—each reflecting her belief in longevity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design.

An accomplished author, Moss has published twelve books that explore decoration, flowers, entertaining, and the meaning of home. Her most recent titles with Rizzoli include Charlotte Moss Flowers (2021) and Home: A Celebration (2021), the latter benefiting the nonprofit No Kid Hungry. Her forthcoming book, Charlotte Moss at Home in Virginia, will be published this Fall. Beyond design, Charlotte Moss is a dedicated philanthropist and cultural steward. She is an Emerita Trustee of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello and serves on the boards of The Bone Marrow Foundation, The Madoo Conservancy, and the International Council of Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens and the National Council of the Cherokee Garden Library at The Atlanta History Center.

Her work has been featured in leading publications worldwide, and her honors include the New York School of Interior Design’s Centennial Medal, The Royal Oak Foundation’s Timeless Design Award, The Bone Marrow Foundation’s Brandon Tartikoff Award, Edith Wharton’s Women of Achievement Award and inclusion on Elle Décor’s Grand Masters list.
