Hazel Trépas, the unwanted thirteenth child of a poor family, who is promised at birth to the god of Death, Merrick (The Dreaded End). When Merrick claims her, he trains her as a powerful healer with the gift of instantly finding cures, but it comes with a curse: she must also see the skull-like apparition (Death's mark) on those fated to die and end their suffering herself, becoming haunted by their ghosts.
