๐ About the movie
The Encampments is a documentary about the U.S. student movement for Palestine, which began at Columbia University and spread across hundreds of campuses nationwide to protest their universitiesโ financial and political ties to the genocide in Gaza perpetuated by Israel and the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). The film follows student and staff activists and organizers as they risk institutional repression, arrests, and detention, repeatedly challenging universities to divest from companies and institutions complicit in the violence. The Encampments is a story of conscience and resistance, highlighting how students and communities can confront injustice, demand accountability, and stand in solidarity with Palestine.
The film screening will be followed by a live Q&A (via Zoom) with:
โข Munther, Director, Lajee Center
โข Angela Godfrey-Goldstein, Jahalin Solidarity
โข A representative from the General Union of Palestinian Teachers (TBC)
Munther and Angela will discuss the day-to-day operations of the Lajee Center, including its various programs supporting children, youth, and the local community in the Aida Refugee Camp. https://lajee.org/about-us/
A representative from the General Union of Palestinian Teachers will also join the panel to provide an overview of the current situation in Gaza and across Palestine, with a focus on education and the challenges faced by teachers and students.
๐Our Mutual Aid Market and Raffle
Before and after the screening and Q&A, browse our Mutual Aid Market stalls, featuring Palestinian artists and raising funds for the Lajee Centreโs backpack initiative. We will also hold a raffle on the night, with a variety of prizes including artworks, art packs, book bundles, and other special items.
In addition to the backpack initiative, a portion of the proceeds from both the market and raffle will also go towards mutual aid call-outs here on Kaurna Yerta as a way to pay the rent. Pay the rent is a practice that acknowledges we live, work and organise on stolen Aboriginal land, and that ongoing colonisation continues to cause dispossession and inequality here in so called Australia. Contributing to Aboriginal-led mutual aid initiatives and call-outs not only recognises our local responsibility but it is also a way to recognise the connections between struggles here and in Palestine.
