As summer wanes and days shorten, leaves turn crimson and gold, and the air crisps with a cool breeze, our thoughts naturally turn to the spooky traditions of autumn. This October, the El Dorado County Historical Society (EDCHS) invites you on a captivating lantern tour through Placerville's Cedar Ravine Historic District.Delve into the lives of the pioneer families who built this unique neighborhood, celebrating their triumphs and exploring their tragedies. Nestled along Cedar Ravine Creek, a tributary of Hangtown Creek, the district showcases an eclectic blend of architectural styles from the Civil War era to the early 20th century, including Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, and Arts and Crafts. Uncover the stories behind these stunning homes and the names of connecting streets like Darlington Avenue, Thompson Way, and Cemetery Street. Explore the oldest church in El Dorado County, discover a hidden pioneer cemetery, and hear fascinating accounts of the area's rich history, including rumored creepy encounters experienced by residents past and present.
Three tours are offered on Saturday, October 26th:
- 10:00 AM Daylight Tour
- 5:00 PM Dusk Lantern Tour
- 7:30 PM After Dark Lantern Tour

The tour begins at the historic M.E. Church at the top of Thompson Way, winds down Thompson Way to Cedar Ravine Road, and concludes at the Pearson Soda Works Building (594 Main Street).
Tickets can be purchased online at EDCHS.ORG or by phone/in-person at the Fountain & Tallman Museum (524 Main St., Placerville, 530-626-0773).
