The Divine to the Demonic: Chandi
Durga Puja is a radiant celebration marking the triumph of good over evil.
Ma Durga - the epitome of Matri-Shakti and destroyer of all evils symbolises the power of divine over the demonic. She represents the infinite power of the universe and is a symbol of female dynamism.Durga Puja has been inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity by UNESCO in 2021: the 14th Indian event on the Representative list.
Celebrating 60+ glorious of Durga Puja in the United Kingdom, Dakshinayan UK, the cultural wing of London Durgotsav Committee will organise an event: “The Divine to the Demonic: Chandi" at The Nehru Centre, High Commission of India, London .
The event will comprise of a dance drama, “Mahishashura Mardini” (the ancient tale narrating the victory of good over evil) which will include recitation of hymns from scriptural verses of “Devi Mahatmyam” or “Chandi Kavya”, Bengali devotional songs and dances. The event will also comprise of presentation and talks emphasising the significance of feminine empowerment in the Hindu religion, about whether Hindu Goddesses can or should be feminist or icons for women’s liberation.
