The Defrost Ritual 2026

The Defrost Ritual is the opening night of Defrost Festival - a free, one-night celebration that kicks off two weeks of the Southern Hemisphere's biggest improv and comedy festival.

Part ceremony, part jam, part party, it's where the whole community gathers to farewell the year that was, welcome the one ahead, and open the festival together.

Expect candlelight, a little spectacle, a lot of warmth, and plenty of chances to join in - though watching is more than welcome too.

New to all this? There's no better introduction. You don't need to know a thing about improv, and you'll leave knowing a lot more people than when you walked in.

Been before? You know the drill - it'll feel like last year, and, as always, it'll be its own strange new thing.

This event is free, however when booking we humbly ask attendees for a donation of any amount they can manage.
