The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot-to-dot journey of the tracks that led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track that opened doors, the track that closed doors, a track that inspired and led to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, CD or streamed – and discussed with the artist. On Thursday 27th March we bring Luke Haines of The Auteurs and Black Box Recorder to Worthing.
Luke Haines is a celebrated musician and author, originally from Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. Following the dissolution of his band The Servants, he formed The Auteurs in the early 90s who would go on to build a strong fanbase across the course of their critically lauded career of 4 albums, with their debut “New Wave” nominated for the Mercury prize and working with Steve Albini on “After Murder Park.”
After The Auteurs split up Luke formed Black Box Recorder with John Moore and Sarah Nixey, recording 3 critically acclaimed albums with the title track from “The Facts Of Life” resulting in the biggest hit of his career.
Alongside this work there was the Baader Meinhof side project, the soundtrack to the film adaptation of Christie Mairy’s Own Double Entry, a variety of collections, compilations and an extensive solo career output which also involved collaborations with R.E.M’s Peter Buck.
He was the subject of the 2012 documentary film “Art Will Save The World” and has written two acclaimed books covering his music career, a cookbook entitled Outsider Food and Righteous Rock 'N' Roll and in 2024 released “Freaks Out: Weirdos, Misfits and Deviants – The Rise and Fall of Righteous Rock’n’Roll” to further acclaim.
Recent months have seen a variety of activity with The Auteurs EMI years celebrated in a CD boxset from Cherry Red, the Freaks Out book received a paperback edition in February 2025 and he has his radio play collaboration with Jim Fry entitled “Test Driving The New Prius” receiving a vinyl release on Record Store Day 2025.
We’re very excited to have Luke joining us at the Cellar Arts Club in Worthing to play and discuss the 10 songs that have defined his creative career, after which there will be a reading from Freaks Out and finishing with a Q&A.
We will also have copies of Freaked Out available on the night and available to purchase upfront ahead of the night at a discounted price.
