On Wednesday, September 9, join us from 7–9pm in the Big Room at The Ship (1221 Union Ave, Kansas City, MO 64101). We’ll hear about three Ladies* whose impact on the musical sphere was nothing less than out of this world. More info below!
THE LADIES
FLORENCE BEATRICE PRICE (1887–1953) was an American classical composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher. She was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. In a wild turn of events that influenced the course of her posthumous reception, a substantial collection of her works and papers was found in her abandoned summer home just outside St. Anne, Illinois in 2009. In 2025, soprano Karen Slack won the Grammy for best classical solo vocal album for her recording of "Beyond The Years: Unpublished Songs Of Florence Price." In the same year, a crater on Mercury was named in Florence's honor.
MARIAN ANDERSON (1897–1993) was an American contralto whose extraordinary voice and determination shattered racial barriers in the classical performing arts. In 1955, she became the first Black soloist to perform at the Metropolitan Opera, opening doors for generations of singers to follow. Her incredible talents brought her to the royal courts of Europe and captured the hearts of the American public. However, her greatest triumphs came in the face of segregation and discrimination at home, where her involvement in the Civil Rights movement shaped America’s cultural landscape.
ALICE PARKER (1925–2023) was a composer, arranger, conductor, and teacher whose work for the human voice made her one of the most beloved choral musicians in America. She is especially known for her arrangements of traditional music—spirituals, hymns, and folk songs—that combine musical complexity with vocal effortlessness. She received numerous awards for her work during her lifetime, and her legacy is carried on in the nonprofit group Melodious Accord, which stems from the choir of the same name she founded at the age of 60.
THE PRESENTERS
Dani Hoisington is an event planner and musician based in Kansas City. In her spare time she can be found reading, going to spin class, participating in elaborately themed book club meetings with her friends, playing the violin, and eating her way around the city with her husband, Will.
Rebecca Ballinger Clark works for Lyric Opera of Kansas City and can be found attending as many arts events as possible and singing opera or musical theater tunes at full volume in her car.
Molly O. Kemper is a writer, translator, and choral singer who moved back to Kansas City from NYC last year. She is also the producer and host of the Dead Ladies Show KC!
