About this Event
About The Creole Pig: Haiti’s Great Loss:
The Creole Pig: Haiti’s Great Loss recounts the story of the remarkable Creole Pig, a livestock that was central to Haitian life for generations. Native to Haiti, the Creole Pig was a cornerstone of rural farming communities, providing farmers with a vital source of economic stability and resilience.
However, in 1978, an outbreak of the African swine flu (ASF) on the island led to the intervention of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Cooperation with the Haitian government, culminating in the eradication of the Creole Pig population. The loss of the pig triggered an economic crisis among farmers and rural communities and would spark political and social upheaval on the island nation.
Through powerful interviews with farmers, economists, educators, and political analysts, the documentary explores the far-reaching consequences of this event. It examines the economic depression that followed and the political and social repercussions while shedding light on Haiti's complex history and the enduring legacy of this tragic loss.
