Join Andrew Legere, fine art photographer and owner of Legere Fine Art Services, for a two week hands on workshop exploring the philosophy and photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Together we will study one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century, examining how patience, observation, and anticipation shaped his remarkable body of work before applying those ideas to our own photography.

Henri Cartier-Bresson believed that photography was not simply about recording the world, but about recognizing the precise instant when form, light, gesture, and meaning come together. He described this as the decisive moment; the fleeting fraction of a second when the visual elements of a scene achieve perfect balance. Working almost exclusively with a small Leica camera and a single lens, Cartier-Bresson wandered streets, villages, and cities across the world, quietly observing life unfold before him. His photographs were rarely staged or manipulated. Instead, they were built through patience, intuition, and an extraordinary ability to anticipate what was about to happen.

In this workshop we will explore Cartier-Bresson's philosophy of seeing, his approach to composition, and the visual geometry that underpins many of his most celebrated photographs. We will study how lines, shapes, shadows, reflections, and human movement work together to create photographs that feel both spontaneous and remarkably ordered. Rather than searching for interesting subjects, we will learn to recognize moments before they happen and position ourselves so that the photograph comes to us.

Over two weeks you will develop your ability to anticipate photographs through a series of guided assignments and group critiques. Beginning with an introductory seminar, we will study Cartier-Bresson's working methods before heading into the streets to put these ideas into practice. Through discussion, editing, and thoughtful critique, you will refine both your observation and your understanding of visual timing.

Your final project will be professionally proofed, printed, and presented as a finished museum quality piece. Each photograph will be carefully refined through the proofing process before being archival mounted, custom matted, and framed in a 16 × 20 inch frame by Legere Fine Art Services. The result is not simply a print, but a finished work of art, thoughtfully crafted and ready to hang, exhibit, or become part of a permanent collection.

WEEK ONE

Monday, August 10

The Geometry of Seeing
An in person seminar introducing the photography and philosophy of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Together we will explore The Decisive Moment, anticipation, visual geometry, and the principles that shaped one of the most influential bodies of work in twentieth century photography. The evening concludes with an introduction to the first assignment.

Thursday, August 13

Assignment I: Photowalk - Anticipation 
Our first assignment is about observation and anticipation. Together we will explore the streets, learning to recognize the relationships between light, geometry, movement, and gesture. Rather than searching for photographs, we will work toward anticipating the moment before it reveals itself.

WEEK TWO

Monday, August 17
6:00pm – 9:00pm 

Critique & refinement
A collaborative critique of Assignment I, exploring composition, anticipation, timing, and visual geometry. Together we will discuss each body of work, refine our approach, and conclude the evening with an introduction to the final assignment.

Thursday, August 20
6:00pm – 9:00pm

Assignment II: Photowalk - The Decisive Moment 
Our final assignment brings together everything we've explored throughout the workshop. We will continue working in the streets, refining our ability to recognize the precise instant when composition, movement, light, and gesture exist in perfect balance. The goal is not simply to capture a moment, but to recognize the one that cannot be repeated.

Monday, August 24
6:00pm – 9:00pm

Final Critique and Print Selection
Our final evening together is dedicated to reviewing the completed assignments and selecting the photograph that best represents each participant's work. Together we will refine each final image through discussion, editing, and proofing before it is professionally printed, archival mounted, custom matted, and framed as a finished museum quality photograph.

Our workshop concludes with the unveiling of each participant's finished photograph.
