About this Event
Now ten years old, Commoners Choir are a radical choir who aim to be a 60-strong singing newspaper. An over-sized, powerful and sometimes chaotic nonconformist gang who use melody and harmony to sing about the state of today's political mayhem. Commoners Choir sing their own self-written songs with as much bluster, joy, anger and fun as they can muster. Their motto is: Disruption, Collaboration and Adventure. They are based in the North of England and have a history of singing sometimes on mountain summits, sometimes with a symphony orchestra, sometimes in churches, libraries and on demonstrations.
Anyone remember the great Chumbawamba?
When Chumbawamba finally called it a day, and tired of humping guitars and amplifiers up countless flights of stairs, Boff Whalley, their lead guitarist, wrote a manifesto for a choir. Commoners Choir is an ever-expanding mob of singers who are following Phil Och's lovely idea of being "a singing newspaper". The choir began as a way of melding the righteous anger and power of The Clash with the massed four-part harmonics of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and is on a mission to collaborate, disrupt and have big adventures.
Come see this 60-strong choral call to arms making a rare visit to London.
