Inside a 22-room neoclassical mansion in Milford, PA, sits one of the most extraordinary artefacts in any small-town museum in America.
On the night of April 14th, 1865, red, white and blue bunting hung from the front of the Presidential Box at Ford's Theatre. When John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln, the theatre's stage manager Thomas Gourlay climbed into the box, tore down a length of that bunting, and pushed it beneath the dying President's head.
The blood-stained flag is now on display just inside the entrance of The Columns Museum. It has been here since 1954.
The same building is haunted by Madame Juliette Peirce.
In life, she was one of the most mysterious women in nineteenth-century America. She claimed Habsburg blood. She owned tarot cards said to have predicted the fall of Napoleon. She married the philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, watched his career destroyed by scandal, and lived out her last twenty years in poverty in Milford with his ashes in an urn on her mantelpiece.
Her possessions are now displayed at The Columns. So, it seems, is she. Visitors report a woman in dark dress standing at the top of the second-floor staircase, pacing the landing, watching from doorways. People who get too close to her belongings have described a sudden, unmistakable feeling of being told to step back.
She is not the only presence here. A small woman is seen in the basement. Disembodied voices have been recorded in empty rooms. And at the top of the attic stairs, visitors with no prior knowledge of the building have described, unprompted, the same vision: a woman falling, while a man stands and watches her go.
