THE CLOISONNÉ: ECHOES OF THE SILK ROAD -- Workshop

Zixiang A is a Chinese Bai ethnic artist specializing in cloisonné enamel, jewelry, sculpture, and oil painting. Trained under Chinese master craftsman Tiehui Huo, her work is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture, particularly the metal art of cloisonné. However, rather than merely replicating tradition, she explores new modes of expression within a contemporary context.

Cloisonné was introduced to China from Arab regions, first gaining popularity in Yunnan before spreading to the central plains. Over time, it evolved within Chinese culture, eventually becoming an imperial treasure and an integral part of Eastern aesthetics. In Zixiang A’s work, this cross-cultural craft transcends static museum displays, engaging dynamically with space, light, and time, transforming into a living cultural symbol.

For this exhibition, she draws inspiration from the Silk Road to create an immersive artistic environment. Cloisonné objects stand atop pillars partially buried in sand, resembling desert beacons that witness the convergence and migration of cultures. Scattered boats drift through shifting sands, symbolizing the passage of time and the search for home. Filigree patterns flow like currents, glazes reflect the imprint of time, and sand carries the weight of memory—history is reborn in this space. Cloisonné is no longer merely a continuation of craftsmanship but a contemporary narrative of culture, history, and movement.

Additionally, during the exhibition, artist Zixiang A will be present on-site to host a cloisonné enamel "dotting blue" technique workshop. Visitors will have the opportunity to closely observe and experience the essence of this ancient craft, guided by the artist in mastering the delicate process of color filling and the transformative power of fire. Whether you are a craft enthusiast or an art explorer, this interactive experience promises to inspire and bring new creative joy.
