In this unique and poignant comedy by Sarah Ruhl, Matilde has come to America from Brazil after losing her parents – the funniest people in her village. She’s been hired by Lane and her husband Charles – two busy, successful physicians – to clean their home; but Matilde hates to clean. She’d rather just try to dream up the funniest joke in the world. Lane’s sister Virginia loves to clean, so she and Matilde make a secret deal: She’ll take care of the cleaning behind Lane’s back. Then Charles falls in love with Ana, whose free spirit touches everyone she meets. Soon, everyone’s secrets are discovered, loyalties are questioned – and the four women see their lives changed in ways they couldn’t have predicted.
