Washington For Justice will feature Jon and Becky Widmer, along with Carol Detweiler from Washington, IA who participated in the Just Peace Pilgrimage (Civil Rights Pilgrimage) sponsored by the Central Plains Mennonite Conference. They followed a path that took them from Atlanta, Georgia to Montgomery, Alabama and then onto Meridian, Philadelphia and Jackson Mississippi. A Pilgrimage is more than a tour of sites, although they did follow a trail of historical landmarks. It is more than just going to interesting museums and memorials. The experience they had on this pilgrimage addressed so many places where "the way things are" is not "the way things should be". They learned that it is the actions or inactions of ordinary people that keep justice or injustice going. They often would ask themselves "What are we doing to bring fairness, justice or change to the lives of those around us?" We need to learn from history. Mark Twain once said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but if often rhymes." Join us for a delightful and inspiring evening learning about our Civil Rights heritage.
