The Church of Me: How Individualism Became Our New Religion
About this Event
📚Lecture: "The Church of Me: How Individualism Became Our New Religion"
🎤Speaker: Grace Richards (BA(HONS) Religious Studies at Carleton University
Why are so many people "spiritual but not religious"? This talk explores how the counterculture movements of the 1960s transformed spirituality in North America, focusing on the rise of Transcendental Meditation and its journey from controversial movement to mainstream wellness practice.
Along the way, we’ll ask a provocative question: has religion really declined, or have we simply created a new kind of spiritual community? By examining the modern obsession with authenticity and self-discovery, we’ll explore how the act of building your own personal belief system may have become one of the defining shared rituals of contemporary life.
Grace Richards is a fourth year undergraduate student in Religious Studies at Carleton University. Her research interests include witchcraft, spirituality, and the sociology of religion.
