This is a story about two families. The Andre Family & The Layton Family.
The Andrew family is middle to lower class family who doesn't have much but finds their riches in family and the things money cannot buy. With Nathen's mothers illness and health rapidly declining, all he wants for Christmas is to purchase the fancy red Christmas shoes for his mother Maggie, that he is so convinced she will love, and make what appears to be her last Christmas, the best on in years.
Now the Layton family is an upper class family, who seems to have everything they could ask for, with the exception of the children really wanting the one thing money cannot buy, more time with their busy father who is more attentive to his business than his children and life at home.
Then come the day Robert Layton is out doing so Christmas shopping and subsequently enters the same store as Nathen is shopping in, and finds himself behind Nathen in the check out line. It becomes clear that little Nathen doesn't have enough money to purchase the red Christmas shoes that he so desperately wants to purchase for his failing mother. So Robert pays for Nathens shoes, and the little boy is beyond excited for the man's generosity, and at the same time awakens something in Robert, a spar of the Christmas Spirit and the true meaning of life, and what is really important.
