The Chopin Festival 2024 - Talk by Prof. John Rink

John Rink is Professor of Musical Performance Studies at the University of Cambridge, and Fellow in Music at St John's College, Cambridge. He is a prize-winning author and expert in the fields of performance studies, nineteenth-century music, music analysis and digital musicology.

His talk will describe Chopin's "apprenticeship" in Warsaw and Vienna, focusing in particular on the composer's six works for piano and orchestra. These played a significant role in Chopin's early career as a virtuoso pianist, yet only the concertos are staples in today's concert programmes, and three of the pieces are rarely performed. There will be live examples on the piano and excerpts from recordings of this captivating repertoire, some of them by Chopin Competition laureates.
